The Boy’s Abode

September 30th, 2009 by Steven · 4 Comments

Hi-o readers! I hope that all of you have recovered from the stinking cuteness that is my son. Man, he is a looker. I’ve warned some of you and now I’ll extend my warning, if you are pregnant or are going to become pregnant you better hope that you don’t have girls, cause if you do they are going to have their hearts broken by The Boy. I’m telling you. He is already a hit with all the nurses on our floor and everyone is melting. We can’t get enough of him.

Since we’re parents now, every post has to have something to do with our child. And this one’s no different. You are about to witness the unveiling of Charlie’s new nursery. We had sooooo much fun putting this whole shebang together. And we realize that not everyone’s going to like what we’ve done with the place. But we’re pretty proud. You ready? Keep all hands and feet inside the car and let’s go!

STEP 1: Prep Work

I’m not going to lie readers, I trusted Wife’s intuition on about 99.95% of this whole thing. (Except for one part that I will brag about later) She’s always got great vision when it comes to these types of things so when she told me about the first project I thought she was Coo Coo for Coco Puffs. Check it.

What is this apparatus that I am MacGrubering? You shall see. Needless to say, this piece of wood was the thing that gave us the most trouble in the whole nursery. We had no trouble with the crib as shown below.

With all the prep work in place, and with Eb’s parents here, we were able to crank out the rest of the nursery. I’ll show off the finished product then go through every deet so you can Ooo and Goo. Ooo and Goo I say!

Well what do you think? As the creators of this masterpiece we were pretty excited on how everything turned out. Wife thinks that the pictures make it look a little sparse but trust us it is chock full of goodies. Let’s take a closer look, shall we? First the shelves:

Remember those furklumpten pieces of wood that I was working with? Wife saw something at a store and thought “Husband can make that!” Well sort of. Hopefully they look professional. From a distance. Squinting. The art piece above the first shelf was drawn by Wife’s aunt Neen. It is incredible. It’s one of my favorite things about the entire room. Another favorite part was the rope cleats that we found at a hardware store and I think they kinda make the whole nautical-inspired theme that we were going for.

The next piece was the chair. We figured since we’re going to be spending the rest of our lives in it, it better be semi comfy. Ohhhhhh readers, is it comfy. It feels like it’s taking my derrier out to a nice romantic dinner and then complimenting it throughout dessert. It. is. awesome.

Then next to that we have our end table with lamp. The lamp shade was tweaked by Wife to match the rest of the room. I think it’s faboo.

Here’s the changing table and baskets. The dresser used to be Wife’s when she was a tot. We gave that a fresh coat of paint. We also painted the hanging baskets and the baskets on the wall. Notice the ribbon on the baskets matches the ribbon on the lamp shade?  We think with a picture of the Chunk, this will a pretty nice place for him to poop his diapers.

And here’s the coup de gras. The place were the Chunk’s going to sleep and dream. We put the monogram up on the wall so he doesn’t forget his name. And the bumper was sewn by Wife’s mom. It looks amazing! We are so thankful to have it! She also made the awesome pillow on the chair. AND the bedskirt! Isn’t she talented?

And here’s my mostest favorite part (I think this is “most favorite part” number 3) We were trying to figure out little touches for room that would give it that nautical flair without being too literal. So while in a craft store we saw something hanging on the wall. We turned it on its side, and a couple coats of stain later, voila!

Eh? Eh? It was pretty crazy how this all came together. Wife found the hanging pieces in a clearance bin and had to root through the whole thing to get them. And somehow unbeknownst to us we got the thing to hang straight. I must say this is the best craft thing I’ve ever done. I’m quite proud if you can’t tell.

Well that about wraps it up. I know this is a big post but we’ve been super excited to show this to you and here it is! Charlies first words better be “Amazing nursery! Muchas gracias mami y papi!” Yes. We expect our child to be bilingual.

Next post is going to be pics of Charlie! Get excited!

The mobile is nautically delicious! And yes, you will be so happy you have a comfy chair in the nursery. My glider was the piece I was most excited to see when we moved our stuff out of storage and into the new house. Well done, my crafty friends!
