Readers!
Happy Sunday readers! I hope you are enjoying yourselves today whatever you are doing. As for me and my house, Wife is taking the new food processor out for a spin and I’m sitting here clacking out a few words to you.
So normally I’d be spending my Sunday morns watching reruns of the Golden Girls and propping up my feet in my fuzzy bunny slippers. So, if I’m not watching reruns (Still got the slippers on) and instead I’m talking to you, my loyal readers, I must have something of great importance to say. Well, circle gets the square readers! I do have something important to say and it concerns The Boy.
On Friday Wife and I went to the doctors for the usual check up. She’s 37 weeks along so we get these appointments every week now. Everything’s rolling good. At the end of the appointment our doc says almost nonchalantly, “Hey why don’t we get an ultrasound cause after checking you I feel that the baby may be a little big.” Of course my finely-tuned parenting skills leap into action. “He’s just big boned! It’s a growth spurt! A glandular problem!” The doctor assured us that everything was fine, he just wanted a second opinion.
So we head into the ultrasound room and they had it all pimped out where the monitor was hooked to a sweet flat screen on the wall so we could get The Boy’s awesomeness in HD. Only way to go, baby. The tech starts measuring parts of his body. First the head: 40 weeks, 1 day. “Not surprising,” I think, “if it’s going to contain his large brain.” Then she measures the arms and legs and abdomen. Everything’s clocking in at an average of 40 weeks, 2 days. We were pretty stunned. The tech then starts going for the glamor shots but warns us that this late in the game, the face can get all smushed up and there’s a chance we won’t see anything. But readers, let me tell you, we saw everything. Behold!
Still a boy, whew!
This one’s his foot. We’re pretty sure he has all five toes.
Obviously he got all the Wife’s genes in the looks department
Don’t you just want to put him in Pampers commercials?!?!
Needless to say, we were pretty amazed. But the best part was when she was looking at his head and gasped. (Note to all you future ultrasound techs, don’t gasp when you are looking at a couple’s first baby. Don’t do anything remotely close to gasping. No “Oh wow”s, no “Well would you look at that?”s, no “I’ve never that before”s, nothing. Just limit all conversation to noncommittal grunts and sign language) Anyway, after picking myself off the floor, the tech said “You can see his hair!” We looked and sure enough like amber waves of grain, The Boy’s locks were wafting in the breeze. It was the craziest thing I’ve ever seen.
So Wife and I are on a huge high and the doctor pulls us in to his office. He looks at the charts and says, “You have a big boy here!” I resisted the urge to punch him in the face and waited for him to continue. He does and says, “Yeah being 9 pounds, 2 ounces ……”
I’m sorry, what did you say?
9 pounds, 2 ounces!?!?!?!
We. were. shocked. Do you know how big 9 pounds, 2 ounces is? At 37 weeks? That’s like giving birth to the baby and he comes out holding a fruitcake or something to hand to you saying, “Thought you might like this. Just my way of saying welcome to the neighborhood.”
9 pounds, 2 ounces!!
So long story short. (Too late!) with The Boy being roughly the same size as a Labradoodle, the doc’s a little concerned on getting him out into this world without amassing huge collateral damage, so we have a C section scheduled for the 28th of September!
Yes readers, this month. This month Wife and I are going to be parents. This month. Shorter than that. In two weeks! Not next week. The next week! It’s crazy! We are super excited to have him here and would appreciate any prayers, mojo, or lucky charms you want to send our way.
9 pounds, 2 ounces!

Hey you guys…remember me? Used to be Heather McKee. I just happened upon your blog and read the great news about your soon to be bundle of joy! Believe me, you are lucky that they found out he was big before the whole labor thing. I went through 16 hours of heck before they did an emergency c-section and surprise, our little Talmage was 9 lbs. 12 oz. I’m heading straight for the OR next time! Good luck and congrats. You’ll do great!

Wow! So much awesomeness in one appointment! Nine pounds - hooray for C-sections, right? We’ll keep you in our prayers that everything goes smoothly. Congratulations again!

I always wonder how much I should say of what I’m thinking about topics like this. Take it for what it’s worth, but here’s my opinion.
C-sections are serious business (and effect all future deliveries) and the decision to have an elective one shouldn’t be made lightly. And I’m sure you haven’t made it lightly. But, keep in mind that measuring by ultrasound has a pretty high margin of error. I had a friend who was told that her baby would absolutely be over 10 pounds at birth if she went full term. Her doctor tried and tried to convince her to schedule a c-section, or at least be induced a couple weeks early. She refused and gave birth naturally to a healthy 7 pound baby. But, then you have people like Heather (hi Heather!!!) who probably would have been very happy to know of a potentially big baby beforehand.
The little (or should I say big) tyke will get into the world one way or another.
I wish you the best with whatever happens and can’t wait to hear all about it.
Let the countdown begin!!!

Holy cow!! (Maybe that wasn’t the best phrase to express my excitement) Two weeks!
Great post Cramer. I laughed audibly multiple times…like amber waves of grain. Brilliant. I am most definitely sending prayers, mojo, and all of the lucky charms that I have your way.

Wow, that’s a good sized kid at 37 weeks. But the pregnant body is surprisingly adaptable and can do AMAZING things. I somehow gave birth to a 9lb kid when even my mom (who has done this 7 times!!) didn’t think it was possible with my tiny, non-birthing hips. Good luck!! We hope things go well.

Holy cow that is so exciting! I’m glad the gasps only meant he was big and nothing bad had happened! I still can’t believe they gasped though.
Congratulations and good luck! Can’t wait to see pics of the little guy

This is the first time I’ve read this because I’ve been teaching and planning 24/7 the last month. We’ll keep you in our prayers tonight. I’m thrilled! Good luck tomorrow.
