Some of you may have read/heard the news about HBO’s show Big Love showing detailed scenes of the LDS temple ceremony and clothing. When I first read it, my stomach got upset. I was frustrated that a) the sacred ceremony would be exploited for ratings and b) on a show about polygamy of all things. After following a link from a fellow blogger, I decided to add my two cents for whatever it’s worth and so can you.
I’m well aware there are pictures, videos and accounts of the temple already floating around cyberspace. Even if we can’t make them change their mind, we can let them know our opinion. Another good option is taking the high road and not saying anything at all…I guess I took a simple detour because I couldn’t help but write to HBO.
FYI Here’s what I wrote:
“I’ve ignored the show thus far; however, when news broke that Big Love would be airing detailed scenes of the LDS temple ceremony and clothing I became outraged. The temple is something extremely sacred, not secret, to members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I find it distasteful and discourteous for HBO and the directors of Big Love to exploit something so sacred to millions of people for a “show.”

I love your note. Good for you. I was seriously so upset when I got the Church news update about that yesterday. The Church’s newsroom had some great commentary about how mind-rotting, unintelligent, and un-uplifting most media is today, and this is exactly why we’re encouraged to limit our media intake, especially for things that have no worth.
Shows that have no values have no problem infringing upon ours!
